Risks to the City of Jacksonville of Starting Over if the Current Contract is not Honored

Jacksonville families and businesses face the same economic challenges as the rest of the country.  This is no time for financial risk, unnecessary liability, or budget surprises.

Like most of the rest of Florida, Jacksonville residents now pay a waste collection fee imposed after state budget cuts.  Unanticipated consequences such as uncertainly, litigation, and delay fee could substantially increase the fee residents and businesses alike.

In tough economic times, there are additional risks that the city should avoid:

  • The responsibility for hundreds of millions of dollars of closure and post-closure costs and services when the current and future cells are closed
  • Loss of $12-14 million of dollars in savings for the next seven years of currently-engineered capacity
  • A return to the “garbage crisis” that the city faced during the early 1990s before WM’s low bid solved this crisis
